Spring/Summer Classic Sneaker Pick

As we transition from a confused spring to a seemingly scorching summer, there calls for a few additions to a gentleman’s sneaker collection.

Now isn’t the time to bring out the Fear of God’s or the limited edition Jordans. Your focus should be more on lighter, breathable, and versatile kicks. So you need shoes that you can wear with or without socks, with shorts or jeans, a suit, or even with swim shorts.

Spring and summer are the seasons to let loose and take it easy (or to the top when the occasion calls for it). So I have partnered up with Superbalist to bring you my pick of 5 sneakers that you can wear with pretty much anything in this scorching heat.

Reebok Classic Leather Gum

Reebok sort of faded away in the early 2000’s due to the hip hop culture veering towards more flashy, bolder sneakers. But its the 90s again now and its all about the classics. We’ve seen a lot of old school brands such Kappa, Fila, and Reebok itself making a come back and really immersing themselves in contemporary pop culture again.
This classic silhouette has made a come back with its PET-esque style and can now be considered a sports-luxe staple. I’ve recently become a big fan of gum soles and this is definitely one of my favorite kicks in that department.

Nike Air Max 97 Ultra’17

Turning 20 this year is the Air Max 97. This futuristic-looking, Christian Tresser design is back and its safe to say it was ahead of its time.
This shoe has evolved from being a runner to a lifestyle staple that is sure to guarantee you a spot in Spova Gang.

Adidas Originals Gazelle

Another classic on my list that has been around since the mid-60s. It’s signature “T” toe overlay and white stripes against bright, suede colors has had immense influence on sneaker designs throughout the years.
This classic now comes in a breathable, lightweight, Prime knit upper which is great for the warm weathers coming our way.

Onitsuka Tiger GSM

With the heavy influence of a tennis shoe, the GSM’s preppy, lace-up aesthetic in a pastel color is definitely one of the winners for this S/S. Pair it with pastel shorts and a tee, or a spray-on-skinny with a white shirt and you’re set to go.

Nike Classic Cortez SE

And last but not least, our beloved Nike Cortez. The 45 year old classic has managed to transcend the sneaker community as cement itself in mainstream pop culture.
The Bill Bowerman design was aimed at comfort and durability in equal parts, providing runners with something that would last through and through; If you’ve watched Forrest Gump, you’ll know what I mean.
The Cortez was quickly adopted by the culture and was seen on the feet of Eazy-E and Whitney Houston at the Super Bowl XXV.

I’d rock these with a pair of linen joggers, a tee, and a light jacket. As I mentioned earlier in the post, this is my pick so if you feel like you want to get a larger pool to pick from, don’t hesitate to go on to the Superbalist website and check out their range. They have a wide range of brands including Nike and Adidas Originals.

You can also download the app on iOS or Android devices; the upside of that is you will get a R250 off your first purchase!
